When litter size increases, there are more small piglets and heterogeneity increases. Those that die are most often piglets that have not gained any weight in the first 24 hours of life. Initial weight gain is crucial: piglets have very few reserves, yet their energy requirements are high. They have high thermoregulation and growth requirements.
